Review: Dr. Konstantin Frank 2017 Margrit Riesling
Rieslings from the Finger Lakes are transcendent at their best. Few do it better than Dr. Frank. Up and down their line you will find excellent Rieslings, but their special single vineyard bottlings are sublime and worth seeking out for a splurge. The Margrit (named after the wife of the Willy Frank, Dr. Frank's son and the second of the so far four Frank generations to run this winery) comes from Seneca Lake vineyard and gets riper than some of their other Rieslings.
Medium straw in the glass, mineral notes dominate this wine, from the expressive nose to the finish. The nose is backed by lychee, lemon zest, and apple blossom. Slate, quince, and pear lead the way in the mouth, followed by stone, yeast, and orange in the mid-palate. Medium mouthfeel with high acidity, the finish of slate, grapefruit and light honey lingers pleasantly. We had this with pan seared swordfish piccata. One of the best American Rieslings.
